Why did the CEO of Tesla Motors, Elon Musk, gather several hundred people at an old Desperate Housewives set in LA last Friday?
To unveil a new product: solar tiles. All roofs from DH’s Wisteria Lane old set were replaced with Tesla’s new textured glass tiles. “The interesting thing is that the houses you see around you are all solar houses. Did you notice?” Musk asked. The unanimous answer was no.
He proceeded to introduce four types of tiles, vastly different in appearance to fit your house’s style, whether it be smooth glass or Tuscan clay. These glass tiles are integrated with solar cells that are almost impossible to detect with a naked eye; they gather solar energy during the day and, with help of Powerlwall 2.0, another one of Tesla’s products, store that energy for the night (when the consumption of electricity is highest). The integrity of the tiles passed the drop test with fascinating results, allowing Elon Musk to make a quite bold statement of saying they are “quasi-infinite” and are much tougher than clay or slate.
I know what you’re thinking, this is amazing but how much will it cost me? Unfortunately, details on pricing, availability, and installation were not mentioned. Musk did mention though that it will be a premium product, placing it at the high end of the roofing material.
In addition, the development of this magic product will depend on shareholders’ vote on whether to acquire SolarCity, a market leader in solar power systems. Thus, solar engineering, product design, and a genius visionary like Elon Musk will come together to bring us the future of roofing.
